The Best Guide To Reusing LED Bulbs

LEDs! They are everywhere but when they break, people think that they belong to the bin. But that’s not true at all! Today, I’ll give you the ultimate guide to using LED modules and this guide is going to be the best of the best.

Do this at your own risk

Let’s get started!

Person 1: I have a LED bulb but it doesn’t light up. It stopped suddenly and there wasn’t any smoke or noise. What should I do with it? Throw it or open it?

Answer: Don’t throw it! Chances are that the driver has blown up and there is no problem with the LED’s themselves. If your bulb is still under warranty then you can visit the service centre and get it repaired, but keep in mind that going to the centre could cost more than a new bulb. If your bulb is not under warranty, then you can open it.

Person 1: How should I open it?

Answer: Most LED bulbs that are not suited for outdoor usage will open when you twist the lens while pulling it upwards. If you can’t open an indoor usage only bulb by this trick, then just use more force. You can use some heat to help. If your bulb is waterproof, it will be hard to open and you will have to use heat which could cost more than buying a new bulb. Therefore, waterproof bulbs aren’t the most reusable bulbs.

Person 1: I opened it. Now what?

Answer: There are many things to can do. You can sell the LEDs or use the LEDs.

Person 1: Can you tell me how I should sell the LEDs?

Answer: First of all, you will have to remove the LED module. To do that you will have to use scissors to cut the wires. If you have done that much, you will have to test the LEDs. You can go to your local electronics shop and they’ll test your LEDs for free or for a small price. After that, you can sell the used LED’s on your preferred website, or you can set up your own website for that.

Person 2: I want to use the LEDs. How should I do that?

Answer: You can make many things from the LEDs but first of all, you will have to desolder the LEDs of the board. Your local electronics shop will do this. After getting off the 12 or so LEDs, you can supply them with some voltage. This part is what requires some skill, you can use a 9-volt battery to power 2-4 LEDs before powering the LED’s, you will have to attach a heatsink.

Person 2: From where should I get the heatsink? And what after that?

Answer: You can use the heatsink from the “broken” bulb itself. The heatsink is a silver, metal, and heat conductive thing that usually has toothpaste-like thermal paste on it.

Person 2: Ok, and what after that?

Answer: You will have to connect 2 LEDs to a 9-volt battery. If the LEDs get hot, add another LED and do that until the LEDs stop overheating. Now use that system for anything. Be sure not to overheat and obliterate the LED.

Person 3: My LED module has burnt up. What should I do with it?

Answer: Recycle it or desolder the working components
